Everything you think adds to your reality which is why it is so important to keep those thoughts positive and know how to deal with negative thoughts when they show up. Positive and negative thoughts are like seeds. Weeds grow from negative thoughts, plants grow form positive thoughts. When you keep this in mind, it will help you understand what you are filling your brain with.

Just like weeds in a garden, negative thoughts spring up easily and try to overtake everything around them. It is a process to keep them at bay. Negative thoughts will choke out any other plants that start to grow. Some weeds are easy to spot, they are big and noticeable but some are small and may look a lot like plants. When I was first married, I remember my mother-in-law wanting me to help weed the garden and I had to ask, how do I know if it is a weed? It is really hard to pull the weeds out if you don’t know what you are looking for. The same applies in your mind. If you don’t know which thoughts are weeds and which are plants, it is hard to pull them out.

A very simple way you can tell if a thought is negative or positive is to think of someone innocent that you love, a child or baby is always a good example. When you are going through your thoughts, if you would not say it to this special person in your life, then don’t say it to yourself. The more you do this, the more sensitive you will be to negative thoughts and the quicker you will recognize them. In the beginning, a negative thought might grow a little before you recognize it and that is okay. This is a process and any weeds you remove will help your plants grow.

Now that you are recognizing the negative thoughts, it is time to pull them out! Seeing and recognizing the weed is not enough. Even if you know it is there, if you don’t pull it out and make room for plants, the weeds will overtake your garden. One simple technique you can use to pull the negative thoughts out, is to write them down. The first time I learned this technique, my reaction was, ‘Wait a second! If I write it down, isn’t that reinforcing the thought!’ No, you are taking the thought from your mind and putting it somewhere else. You are freeing up that space in your mind for positive thoughts. I like to carry around a journal that I write down my negative thoughts and emotions as I have them. It makes me happy to know those thoughts are no longer in my brain and are trapped in my journal.

Have you every pulled the weeds in a section of garden but didn’t plant anything? I have and it didn’t take long before that same section was full of weeds again. The best way to make it hard for weeds to grow is to plant something else. Positive thoughts need to be planted to replace the negative thoughts. The more positive thoughts planted, the harder it is for the negative thoughts to take over.

Music is a wonderful tool to use when planting positive thoughts in your mind. You need a very specific process when you choose music, listening to the radio doesn’t work! Before you choose a song, read the words to the song. The word to the song will be planted in your brain. You just went to a lot of work to pull out the negative thoughts, make sure you are replacing them with positive ones.
